Everyone woke up and left home by about 7am+ that morning. We planned to take the 830am jetty to Rotness Island, but couldn’t find the right venue where the ferries are waiting. In the end we settled for the one at 930am.
We dropped by the visitors centre at Rotness and then headed to Dome for a quick lunch. Later on we left for a 1hour+ cruise around the island. They brought us to different parts of the island as well as other smaller islands slightly away from Rotness to spot some animals in their natural habitat.
The speed boat was really bumpy, windy and extremely cold! The seats on the front of the boats had seat belts while the last 2 rows behind did not. They mentioned that it was way bumpier in front even though we sat in the back and it was already extremely bumpy. I’m always happy when we reach our destination and the boat stops for us tourist to look out for the animals.
Managed to visit the New Zealand Fur Seals first. Sunbathing on the rocks and taking a dip once in a while. They were super adorable!
We tried to look out for the Sea Lions next, but they were no where to be found. Bummer. We caught sight of some hawks that nested in the area and fortunately got to see some dolphins! Caught sight of about 5 of them near the sea grass (probably searching for food), and one of them even had a calf! How adorable. Baby dolphins need to breathe more often, so you’ll see them popping out of the surface more than the adults to catch some air.
Back on land, we spotted two Quokkas not far from one another. With the many visitors around, they were not afraid at all.
I tried to snap a photo and it came right up sniffing it’s curious nose into my camera. How adorable! Didn’t manage to get a good photo with it’s huge nose getting all the lime light, so I took out my GoPro and once again it came very close to it and I caught the footage. Yay!
We took a walk around the area and had Simmo’s Ice Cream. Single scoop cone for $5! Huge ice cream serving!
Then again, it IS $5 (Malaysian POV). I like the flavour I chose : Cookies, and am happy with my ice cream. It was my ice cream and I against the world! ..but the sun was hot and my ice cream cried a little. Anyways, we headed over near the beach side and took a seat admiring the waves. Caught sight of a couple of people paddle boarding. I’d really love to try that some day (we were all lazy that day). Walking up, I picked 3 pine cones from the ground. I’m a crafter at Craftysupermom and thus these kind of things attract me. I’m thinking gold glitter on pine cones’ edges plus sand in a nice transparent jar. What do you think?
The weather was really hot and sunny that day and we cowered away under the trees. We lay down our bags and other stuff and took them as pillows as we rested in the shade. To prevent any unwanted white missiles falling from the sky (hint: evil birds), I placed my sun hat on my face while my eyes slowly drifted away into darkness. It was SO nice to sleep under the tree. *yawn* We pretty much slept till time was up. We booked the 445pm jetty back so there wasn’t actually that much time. I think it’d be great if we could stay a night. We’d have more time for cycling and snorkelling, paddle boarding and such. We did think to go cycling that day but it wasn’t that worth it with the time left after lunch and the cruise.
And that’s all for Rotness Island! I wish I had more stories to tell but time was pretty short there as we didn’t plan to stay over.
