DIY | My Little Pony Rarity Birthday Card

Say it LOUD, say it PROUD!
I’m a 22yo girl who loves cartoons and animations!
(psst. probably the secret to how I get along with kids so well)

Some time back, I was invited to a little girl’s birthday surprise! She (and I) loves watching MLP! For those of you who don’t know, MLP stands for My Little Pony! Her favourite pony is Rarity, the one with the whole craze for diamonds, gems and all things bejeweled! The fashionista pony!
Rarity Card Done
And with that, I decided to make a handmade Rarity card specially for her! I think it turned out beautifully!
If you’d like to make your own, you can follow the tutorial below!

*Rarity was done in several layers and this project involves a lot of cutting. I cut all the pieces out by hand.*

Here’s what I used :
1) A printed design of Rarity
2) Purple cardstock
3) White cardstock
4) Purple, Blue & Black Markers (I used Copics and Sharpies)
5) Scissors
6) Double-sided Tape (or glue)
7) Pencil and eraser
8) Paperclips (I did not use this, but it’ll help if you have them)

Rarity Card20160414_133629Start out by cutting the full outline of Rarity. I placed the printed piece (mine was printed on A4 paper) on top of a white cardstock. Follow the shapes and cut it out. The paper clips will come in handy here to hold the papers in place. Place them around different parts of Rarity and remove them as you cut.

Next up, cut out Rarity’s gorgeous purple mane and tail. I did this the same way as the above, simply cut the template out (your printed piece), place it on top of the purple cardstock and cut! I did the same for Rarity’s horn.

Here’s how it looks so far. Her printed eye temporarily in place to see the overall design.

Use your marker (I used my purple copics) to draw Rarity’s outlines and add details to her face, ear, mane and tail. Also mark where the horn and the eye goes. For the horn and eye, gently lift up the template pieces once you’re satisfied with its position and dot.

for the horn.

for the eye.
Rarity Card 3
My drawing of My Little Pony – Rarity’s eye. I used a black sharpie for the eyelashes (I used a blade to help trim the tips) and pupil. Then used various shades of blue copic markers for the eye color.

Loving how it turned out so far!
Using the same cut method as above, create Rarity’s cutie marks (the 3 little diamond on her flank). Add details.
Rarity Card Colored
Attach everything together. I cheated and used double sided tape rather than glue (glue stick might work better than liquid glue).
Now all you have to do is to add Rarity to a piece of card!

Add names if you’d like to make it more personalized.
I absolutely love how it turned out!

Success! Wishing everypony the very best on your piece!
Galloping off,
Jolene
