6am rolled by and I woke before my alarm rang. I continued to laze around till 640am before I got up to start my day. We’re heading to the temples that day and the van were to pick us up between 730-830am.
As everyone woke up, we went for the hotel’s breakfast buffet. It was great! Not so many local dishes, but there were a lot of varieties and they were all of good quality. We had Fruits, Pastry, Yogurt, Fried Rice, Eggs, Bacon and so much more. The croissants were nice and crispy. It was really lovely. They offered us tea/coffee and had choices of Mocha, Latte, etc. After breakfast, we waited for our van to bring us for our temple tour.
We rushed our breakfast, quickly washed up and headed to the lobby to wait for our van. Unfortunately, due to another tourist, the van was delayed and we were only picked up around 9am.
The van brought us to purchase our tickets. Do take note that you’ll need to be present in front of the counter when purchasing your ticket – this applies to both adults and kids. They’ll also be taking your photo. Be sure to smile as it will be on your ticket!
Off to Angkor Wat we went!
Something interesting I learnt about the temples were of the stones used. There are 2 types of stones, one of them is made of volcanic ash. It has a reddish tone, is very strong and hardy, which makes it very stable but unsuitable to carve on. They are always used as the foundation and occasionally on pathways. The second kind of stone is grey and are easy to carve on. They are often used to create beautiful carvings on.
We had a break for lunch after Angkor. The tour brought us to a restaurant. I found it a little pricey and I wasn’t too hungry then, so I only ordered their coconut shake (usd2). Their fried rice was priced at usd7.50, fruit platter at usd4 and their kids meal are all from usd5 onwards. I decided to save up and spend it on a nicer meal more worth the price in the evening.
We visited a couple more temples after – Ta Prohm and Bayon.
*I’ve mixed up on which photos belong to which temples*
At the third temple (Bayon), I needed to use the washroom and found that you needed to pay usd0.5 to use it. There is another toilet (free) around, but it’s much further off. So do keep that in mind. At some temples, you may find people selling food/merchandise on the opposite road. We treated ourselves to a coconut ice cream each at usd0.5
We met this uncle from Japan on our tour
We ended our temple tours at Bakheng Hill around 5pm+ to wait for the sunset. It’s a climb and you’d have to queue in line to head up. The hill is limited to 300pax on the very top at a time. You will not be allowed up in shorts and sleeveless, so take note of that. They are pretty strict about it.
It was a really hot and tiring day. The temples were very interesting, but they all look pretty much similar in some way and the sun is no help in making the day more enjoyable.
We were all dying to head back to the hotel for a quick rest before heading back out to explore Pub Street in the evenings. It was very happening at night with all the lights and people.
You’ll also get to see sellers with trays of bugs walking around (No photos cause they charge usd0.50 for a photo of the stuff they sell). After all that, we dined at Khmer Family and headed back to the hotel for bed.
